# ChatGPT Cites Reddit on 2% of Answers. The prompts were identical and the runs were an hour apart. Reddit did not become less useful to AI answers in August. It stopped being a default source in one engine, and the reason is visible in the search queries ChatGPT writes for itself. ## What the 86% number was On 18 August, Promptwatch reported that reddit.com’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a 3.83% average between 18 July and 7 August to a 0.52% average between 14 and 17 August. That is a relative drop of 86.4%. The figure travelled fast and lost its caveat on the way. Promptwatch labelled the finding provisional and wrote that a data-collection issue could not be ruled out. The same report showed Google moving differently. AI Overviews slid from 2.37% to 2.10% over the period, and AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54%. Both are gradual. Neither looks like the ChatGPT step change. Two questions were left open. Whether the drop was real, and what caused it. We ran 550 responses across five engines to answer both. ## Five engines, one prompt set We sent the same 100 prompts to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot on 23 August 2026, US geo. No prompt contained the word “Reddit”. Fifty asked for lived experience or a subjective call, fifty asked for a fact, a mechanism or a procedure. Here is Reddit’s share of the citations each engine returned. ChatGPT returned 1,221 citations across the run and 11 of them pointed at Reddit. AI Mode returned 1,640 and 133 pointed at Reddit. The gap is not a sampling accident and it is not a quiet vendor bug, because five pipelines would have to break the same way on the same day. Reddit is still a heavily cited domain in AI answers. It is barely one in ChatGPT. Reddit citation share by engine, and what one added sentence does inside ChatGPT. The split by prompt type matters as much as the engine. In AI Mode, Reddit took 13.5% of citations on the experience-seeking half and 2.8% on the factual half. In Perplexity, 14.6% against 6.7%. Reddit’s share is a function of what people ask, which is why a single blended number is easy to misread. It writes its own queries first, then retrieves against those. Those subqueries are recoverable, and they explain the whole result. Across the 46 ChatGPT responses where the subqueries were visible, ChatGPT wrote the word “Reddit” into its own search exactly once. Splitting on that one word: - When the subquery named Reddit: 21.3% of citations came from Reddit. - When it did not: 0.1%, a single Reddit URL across 1,002 citations. A second detail from the same run: 52 of the 100 ChatGPT responses ran no web search at all. Those answers came with few links or none. Half the questions never reached the open web, and of the half that did, almost none went looking for Reddit. This lines up with a change Promptwatch documented on 10 August and nobody connected to the Reddit story. On 8 August, ChatGPT Search’s use of the site: operator inside its subqueries jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of all subqueries in a single day, and the number of subqueries per answer went from about 1.08 to about 1.83. ChatGPT moved from broad open-web retrieval to targeted retrieval aimed at named domains. Under broad retrieval Reddit surfaced because it ranks. Under targeted retrieval, something has to decide to go and get Reddit. ## The controlled test: one sentence, 18x the Reddit citations One response in the top bucket is a hint, not a finding. So we built a paired test. Twenty-five prompts, each sent twice in the same batch. The first copy went as written. The second had one sentence appended: “What do real users say about it?” Neither version ever says “Reddit”. Sixteen of the 25 pairs went from zero Reddit citations to at least one. None went the other way. A McNemar exact test on those 16 to 0 discordant pairs gives p = 0.00003. The important control: web search fired on 12 of 25 in the first version and 11 of 25 in the second. Both versions searched at the same rate. What changed is what ChatGPT searched for. Adding an experience-seeking sentence pushed ChatGPT to write “Reddit” into 10 of its 11 visible subqueries, up from 0 of 12. Reddit was not demoted in ChatGPT. It was de-defaulted. It now arrives when the phrasing of the question tells ChatGPT that someone wants first-hand opinion, and it stays absent otherwise. ## Why two trackers can report different Reddit shares and both be right If Reddit’s citation share depends on the phrasing of the prompt, then citation share is a property of the prompt set as much as of the engine. Two AI visibility tools running different prompt mixes will publish different numbers for the same week, and neither is wrong. That has a direct consequence for anyone using a tracker. A share number is only comparable to itself, measured on a frozen prompt set. Change the prompts and you change the baseline. Reddit recovered part of the ground within a week. The syndicated number went stale in six days. ## What to do with this ### If Reddit is part of your distribution - Keep it, and stop counting on ChatGPT for it. Reddit still takes 8.1% of AI Mode citations and 10.7% of Perplexity’s on the same prompts. Reddit reaches ChatGPT through experience-seeking questions, so a thread only helps you there if buyers phrase things that way. - Do not read this as a repeat of [Reddit’s earlier citation decline](https://organikpi.com/blog/distribution/reddit-citation-drop/). That one was a slow rebalancing across every model between October 2025 and January 2026. This one is one engine, one retrieval change, four days. ### If you are optimising your own domain - The site: shift makes your own domain a retrieval surface. When ChatGPT runs a domain-scoped search against you, thin pages and unindexed content cost you answers directly. - Cover the experience angle on your own pages. The queries that used to route to Reddit are still being asked. The 100-prompt set was fixed before collection and split 50/50 between experience-seeking and factual questions. Counts are of the citation list each engine attached to its answer. We run this with our own open-source GEO/AEO tracker. - No backfill. These runs are from 23 August, so they establish the current state and the mechanism, not the shape of the drop between 8 and 17 August. - Absolute levels here are not comparable to Promptwatch’s. Their prompt universe is far larger and composed differently, and half of ours is deliberately experience-seeking. - One run per cell, no repeats. Several pairs carry small citation counts where a percentage is noisy. The result rests on the response-level counts, 19 of 25 against 3 of 25, and the 16 to 0 pair flips. - ChatGPT exposed its subqueries on roughly half its records, so the subquery figures describe that subset.
