What is AI visibility? Definition, scores, and what good looks like in 2026
TL;DR
  • AI visibility is the degree to which a brand appears in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews.
  • It combines four components: presence, citations, sentiment, and share of voice against competitors.
  • Tools compress these into a score, usually 0 to 100, and scores only compare within a single tool because prompt panels, engine mixes, and weightings differ.
  • A good score trends upward, narrows the gap to competitors, and covers prompts close to purchase.

AI visibility measures how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews mention your brand or cite your site when people ask questions in your category. A growing share of buying research now ends inside an AI answer, and brands that never appear in those answers lose deals they never see. You can measure it, score it, and improve it.

Definition: AI visibility is the degree to which a brand appears in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI features. It covers four signals: whether the brand shows up at all, whether its pages are cited as sources, how the answer describes it, and how much of the conversation it owns versus competitors.

The term is young. Search gave us rankings we could track for two decades. AI assistants give us generated answers that change from run to run, cite sources unpredictably, and never show a results page. AI visibility is the umbrella metric that describes how a brand performs inside those answers, and it has quickly become the number this whole area of work is judged by.

Why AI visibility became its own metric

People moved first. According to Pew Research Center, 34% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT, roughly double the share from 2023, and 58% of adults under 30 have used it. Product research, vendor shortlists, and best-tool-for-the-job questions that used to start on a search engine now often start in a chat window.

Google moved with them. AI Overviews answer many queries right on the results page. Pew’s browsing study of 900 U.S. adults found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of searches that showed an AI summary, against 15% when no summary appeared. Links inside the summaries themselves were clicked on just 1% of those visits. In the same study, 18% of all Google searches produced an AI summary, and that share rose to 60% for searches phrased as questions.

Your analytics feel this before your revenue does. Fewer clicks reach your site even when the demand behind them is intact, a pattern we unpacked in our look at how AI search adoption is reshaping traffic. Rank tracking cannot describe any of it. Position three on a results page says nothing about whether Gemini recommends you, whether Perplexity cites you, or how ChatGPT frames your pricing. The click side of the story has its own numbers, covered in our breakdown of what AI Overviews do to organic clicks.

The four components of AI visibility

Every tracking tool and every manual audit measures some mix of the same four components. The mix is what varies.

ComponentWhat it measuresExample signalHow to check
PresenceWhether AI answers name your brand at allChatGPT lists you among recommended vendors for a category promptRun 20-30 buyer prompts and count the answers that name you
CitationsWhether your pages are used as sourcesPerplexity shows your URL in its source listOpen the source panel on each answer and log your URLs
SentimentHow answers describe you when you appearAn answer calls you reliable but flags your pricingRead full answers and record the adjectives and framing
Share of voiceYour slice of mentions versus competitorsYou appear in 4 of 20 answers while a rival appears in 12Score the same prompt set for every brand you compete with

Presence is the gate. If the answer never names you, nothing else can be measured. Citations matter on their own because an engine can cite your page without naming your brand, and it can name your brand without citing a single page you own. Sentiment decides whether a mention helps or hurts. Share of voice puts your numbers next to your competitors’, which is where they start to mean something. We went deep on that last component in our guide to measuring your slice of AI answers.

The prompt set behind all four matters more than the math. Twenty prompts real buyers actually ask beat two hundred generic ones. Building that set is closer to customer research than to keyword research, a shift we explained in our comparison of prompt sets and keyword lists.

How AI visibility fits with SEO and GEO

SEO earns positions on a results page. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of earning a place inside generated answers. AI visibility is the scoreboard for that work. If GEO is the training plan, AI visibility is the race result. Our plain-English introduction to generative engine optimization covers the discipline itself, and we compared the two practices in detail in our side-by-side look at SEO and GEO.

The two feed each other. Pages that rank well get cited more, and AI engines weigh many of the same quality signals search engines do. Most brands improve their AI visibility by restructuring pages that already rank.

What an AI visibility score actually is

An AI visibility score condenses those four components into a single number, usually on a 0 to 100 scale. Tracking tools compute it by running a fixed panel of prompts across selected engines on a schedule, then scoring each answer: did the brand appear, was it cited, how early in the answer did it show up, and in what light. Those per-answer results roll up into the headline score.

Every tool makes different choices along the way, which is why the same brand gets different scores in different tools:

  • Prompt panel. One tool samples 50 prompts for your category. Another samples 500 different ones.
  • Engine mix. Some tools lean heavily on ChatGPT. Others sample Google’s AI features, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot evenly.
  • Run frequency. Generated answers change between runs, so a daily sample and a weekly sample capture different pictures.
  • Weighting. One tool counts a citation the same as a brand mention. Another scores them separately.

The practical rule: an AI visibility score is only comparable to itself. A 42 in one tool and a 61 in another can describe the same brand in the same week. Track one tool’s score over time, and against competitors inside that same tool. We tested the major trackers and noted how each one scores in our rundown of AI visibility trackers.

Scores also move when nothing about your brand changed. Engines ship model updates, answers vary by country and by account history, and a prompt that named you on Monday can skip you on Thursday. Expect noise. Read four-week trends, and treat a single-day drop as sampling variance until it repeats.

What a good score looks like

There is no universal benchmark, and any vendor that promises one is glossing over the prompt-panel problem. The useful benchmarks are relative, and they differ by where your brand sits:

  • Category leaders should appear in most answers on their core category prompts. If buyers ask for the best tool in a market you lead and you are absent from half the answers, that is a real problem.
  • Challengers typically appear in a minority of broad category prompts and win on the niche prompts where their positioning is sharpest.
  • New brands usually start near zero, and that is normal. The early goal is presence on a handful of money prompts, then citations, then share of voice.

Whatever the raw number, three signs tell you a score is good: it trends up quarter over quarter, the gap to your nearest competitor is closing, and it covers prompts close to purchase, the comparison and best-of questions that build shortlists. A high score earned only on trivia prompts is decoration. Which numbers deserve a permanent spot on your dashboard is a question we answered in our guide to AI search numbers worth tracking.

What moves AI visibility up or down

Engines decide which brands to name and which pages to cite based on signals you can influence.

  • Answer-shaped content. Pages that state the answer in the first two sentences get quoted. Long wind-ups get skipped.
  • Mentions beyond your site. Engines trust brands that comparison posts, review sites, and communities already talk about. Your own domain alone rarely carries the weight.
  • Structured data. Clean markup helps engines parse who you are, what you sell, and how your pages relate. We covered the specifics in our guide to structured data for AI engines.
  • Author and brand credibility. Named authors with verifiable credentials change how engines weigh a page, which is why we track author authority signals in AI search.
  • Crawler access. If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, some engines cannot read or cite you at all.

Each engine also has its own habits. What earns a recommendation in ChatGPT differs from what earns a Perplexity citation or an AI Overviews slot. Our playbook on getting your brand recommended in ChatGPT starts with the biggest engine first.

How to check your AI visibility today

You can get a real read in an afternoon without paying for anything.

  1. Write down 20 to 30 questions your buyers actually ask. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, review sites, and community threads.
  2. Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode. Use clean sessions so personalization does not skew the answers.
  3. Log four things per answer: were you named, were you cited, how were you described, and who else showed up.
  4. Repeat monthly with the same prompts. A single snapshot tells you little. The trend is the metric.

We published a full walkthrough of this process, including a scoring spreadsheet, in our step-by-step self-audit guide. On the measurement side, assistants that send you traffic can be tagged and reported. Our tutorial on tracking AI referrals in GA4 shows the exact setup.

When the audit exposes gaps, fix them in order: crawler access first, then content structure, then authority. Our full checklist for generative engines sequences those fixes so the cheap, high-impact work happens first.

Where to start this week

Pick the smallest version of everything above and run it now.

  • Today: run five buying prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Note who gets named and who gets cited.
  • This week: build the full 20 to 30 prompt set and score one competitor alongside yourself.
  • This month: fix the single biggest gap the audit exposed, then re-run the same prompts and compare.

If you would rather see your numbers without building the spreadsheet yourself, a free check of where you stand in AI answers maps your presence, citations, and share of voice on prompts from your own market. Either way, measure before you optimize. The brands winning AI answers today started counting a year ago.
