You have two blog posts on almost the same topic. An audit tool flags them red and tells you they are cannibalizing each other, tanking your rankings, confusing Google. The usual advice is to panic and merge everything.
For Google’s blue links, that panic is mostly wrong. For AI search, it points at a real problem the tools are not measuring yet.
Here is the honest version of both.
What keyword cannibalization actually is
Keyword cannibalization is when several pages on your site target the same or a very similar query, so they end up competing with each other instead of with anyone else. Ahrefs defines it as multiple pages that “compete against each other for search engine rankings,” which “can dilute the website’s ability to rank.”
The classic symptoms: two of your URLs trade places for the same query week to week, the wrong one ranks, and the authority that should compound on one strong page is split across two weak ones.
For Google, it is mostly overblown
Here is the part most audit tools skip. Google does not get confused when two of your pages match one query. It reads both, understands them, and ranks whichever it thinks fits best.
John Mueller of Google said this plainly in 2025, answering an SEO who was worried about two pages showing up for the same search:
Reduce unnecessary duplication and spend your energy on a fantastic page, sure. But pages aren’t duplicates just because they happen to appear in the same search results page.

He added that if the overlap only shows up in a spreadsheet and not in real impressions, “it’s not really ‘cannibalization’ if it’s theoretical.”
So for blue links, two pages on a similar topic are often fine. Google picks one, ranks it, and moves on. The loser still sits somewhere on the page. Merging every flagged pair is busywork, and sometimes it deletes a page that was ranking for its own set of queries.
That is the reassuring half. Now the half nobody is auditing.
AI engines do not pick one page and move on
Google ranks pages. AI answer engines retrieve passages.
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode a question, the engine does not line up ten blue links. It pulls chunks of text from across the web that sit closest in meaning to the question, then writes an answer from the few it trusts most and cites them.
Two of your pages that say nearly the same thing about the same query are, to that system, almost the same point in vector space. They land in the same neighborhood and compete for the same citation slot. The engine takes whichever passage happens to score highest in that moment, which is often the older page, the thinner one, or the one you forgot you published. You end up cited against yourself, by the weaker page.
I want to be straight about the evidence here. There is no controlled study yet that measures “AI cites the weaker of two competing pages.” What we have is the mechanism: retrieval works on passage similarity, near-duplicate passages crowd each other, and where a sentence sits on the page decides a lot about whether it gets picked. The consequence follows from how the system works, and it is worth getting ahead of.

Why the stakes are higher than they were
In blue links, cannibalization costs you a position. Your second-best page slides from three to seven. Annoying, survivable.
In an AI answer, there is usually one citation per point. There is no position seven. You are either the source the engine names or you are invisible for that question. Splitting your own signal across two half-pages is a good way to be neither. This is the same reason your share of AI citations behaves less like a ranking and more like a single seat you either hold or lose.
How to spot it
You are looking for two pages fighting over one job.
- In Search Console, filter by a query and check the pages that get impressions for it. Two URLs trading impressions for the same query, neither strong, is the signal. Two URLs that each own a different query are not a problem, whatever a tool says.
- Search your own site. Type
site:yourdomain.com your topicand see how many near-identical pages come back. - Ask the engines. Put your core question into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and see which of your pages, if any, gets named. If it is an old post you meant to retire, that is cannibalization doing its quiet damage. This is the first step in any AI citation recovery too.
How to fix it
The fix is consolidation, and it works. Backlinko had two articles competing for the same term, merged them with a 301 redirect, and reported 466% more clicks year over year in the eight weeks that followed. One strong page beat two weak ones.
The playbook:
- Pick the keeper. Usually the page with the most links and the strongest history. Fold the useful parts of the other into it.
- Redirect the loser. A 301 to the keeper passes the signal along. If you need the old URL live for a while, the choice between 301, 302 and canonical changes what the engines do with it.
- Point your internal links at the keeper. Update the internal links that used to go to the retired page, and mind the anchor text you use so it reinforces the one page you want cited.
- Prune what is left. If a page has no traffic, no links and no reason to exist alone, deleting it can lift the pages that remain.
Then stop cannibalization at the source: before you publish, check whether you already have a page for that query. A quick content gap check tells you whether you are filling a hole or digging next to an existing one.
When it is not cannibalization
Do not over-correct. Two pages are supposed to coexist when they answer genuinely different questions. “What is marketing attribution” and “marketing attribution software pricing” share words and share nothing else. One teaches, one is for a buyer comparing tools. Merging them makes both worse.
The test is intent, not keyword overlap. Map your pages to the questions people actually ask, and if two pages answer the same question in the same way for the same reader, that is the pair to fix. If they answer different questions, leave them alone. This is exactly the distinction Mueller was making: similar words on the page are not the same as duplicate purpose.
What to do this week
- Open Search Console, sort by your top ten queries, and note any query where two of your URLs both get impressions.
- For each real pair, decide the keeper, 301 the other, and re-point the internal links.
- Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode your five most important questions and write down which of your pages they cite. Any old or thin page showing up is a consolidation candidate.
- Add one line to your publishing checklist: does a page for this query already exist? If yes, strengthen it instead of starting a rival.
Cannibalization was never really the ranking emergency the tools made it out to be. It is a signal problem, and in AI search a split signal is the difference between being the cited answer and not being in the answer at all. Fixing it is mostly a matter of deciding which of your own pages deserves to win.
