Ranking your own product first on a best-of list gets you cited by AI. It rarely gets you recommended. We checked 8,272 citations across 1,920 answers. Vendors ranked themselves first on 82 percent of their own lists that AI engines cited. Gemini leans on these lists the most, citing one in 44 percent of its answers. Copilot uses them least, in about one answer in six. But when an engine cites a vendor's own list, it leaves that vendor out of the answer 46 percent of the time. A first place on someone else's list works far better. It led to a recommendation 86 percent of the time, against 54 for your own list. Small brands gain the most. A niche brand's own list lifted it from 5 to 26 percent of answers. A first place on another site's list lifted it from 21 to 67. Same tactic, different results. Artisan's list put it in seven answers. Airwallex's list was cited six times, and Airwallex was never named. So publish your list for the citation, not the ranking, put the real effort into third-party lists, and check each engine on its own. Cited is not the same as chosen.
